The following Outreach Services are provided to Kansas children (ages
0-21) who are blind or visually impaired:

Consultations to school districts and parents about strategies for teaching
the student who is blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple
disabilities.

Evaluations in the student's home or school followed by recommendations for
educational programming, materials, and equipment. Evaluations in the following
areas are available: Functional Vision, Braille, Orientation & Mobility,
Technology, Daily Living Skills and Vocational/Transitional Skills.

Comprehensive Evaluations at KSSB by a multidisciplinary team of
specialists. These evaluations range from 5 to 30 days.

Vocational Assistance to provide guidance and counseling, individual work
experience, and career development activities. The SWEATS (Student Work
Experience Achieves Transition Success) Program assists local school districts
to provide career development experiences for students in their own communities.
With help from the Kansas Rehabilitation Services/Division of Services for the
Blind and other organizations, KSSB coordinates an effort to help students learn
job skills through classroom activities and paid jobs in the community.

Direct Service to students who are blind or visually impaired in Orientation
and Mobility and compensatory skills.

Inservice Training and Workshops for school personnel and parents.

Braillewriter and Recorder Repair by the AT&T Telephone Pioneers
Volunteers.

KIRC is a State and Federally funded project that provides assistance and
support to Kansas school districts including:

Instructional Materials Center of Braille and large type textbooks and
library books, and educational aids for loan to teachers for use by students
with visual impairments.

Braille Transcription of educational materials by the KIRC-sponsored Delores
R. Benjamin Volunteer Transcription Group and the El Dorado Correctional
Facility Braille Unit.

Continuing Education and professional development opportunities for
teachers.

Newsletter and other communications to inform and support teachers.

Professional Library of materials for loan to teachers.
-
Kansas Deaf-Blind Library of professional materials for loan to parents,
families and professionals.

Assistive Technology Resource Center of adaptive equipment for loan/lease to
local school districts for use by Kansas students with visual impairments.
