Curricular Areas

Kansas State School for the Blind's four curricular areas are Preschool, Elementary, Secondary, and Life Skills. All classes are conducted in very small groups and with high levels of individual attention to each student.


This model Early Childhood classroom maximizes development by having teachers and family work together as a team, with a focus on activities which build strong self-concepts and identities as learners. This program builds a foundation for the specialized skills students need for learning.


The elementary educational program for students provides accommodated or modified academic courses to meet every student's individual needs through differentiated instruction. Delivery of the curriculum employs teaching strategies that utilize multi-sensory and experience-based approaches to learning in small class sizes. Tactile readiness programming enables students to familiarize themselves with different textures and concepts relevant to everyday life. Curriculum-based field trips are used as a means of exposure to help develop concepts in the world outside.

Assistive devices and technology are available for use by our students. Ipads and computers are equipped with hardware and software that makes them accessible . Reading materials are provided in whatever format a student requires for success.
The Expanded Core Curriculum is incorporated into the elementary classroom, as well. Promoting independence and good self-esteem by trained instructors in Orientation and Mobility and Daily Living Skills classes are tailored to each student's needs.
The goal of the elementary department is to help each student develop age appropriate intellectual and emotional maturity and the skills necessary to be successful.


KSSB's Middle and High School Programs accommodate learners needing either a regular or an adapted curriculum. The regular curriculum meets the needs of students likely to attend college, and the adapted curriculum equips students entering the workforce and community with the skills to function as independent adults.


A comprehensive and individualized program that provides the skills and experiences to facilitate an effective transition from high school to adulthood and the world of work. The Transition program allows students to participate in graduation ceremonies in their local school and then come to Kansas State School for the Blind for this targeted training.

Life Skills

KSSB's Life Skills Program is designed for students who are visually impaired and who have additional disabilities requiring more suppo. This highly structured program has great success in working as a team with parents to achieve remarkable breakthroughs in the development of skills and interests.

Special Features

KSSB is an environment rich in opportunities for learning. Each student is surrounded by a multidisciplinary team of educators and specialists who understand blindness. Students can choose among an array of on-campus classes, as well as classes held in nearby schools. There is an abundance of afternoon and evening programs, such as tutoring, recreation, sports and independent living skills training. Unique opportunities in the arts are provided by Accessible Arts, Inc. program.

Recreation and Leisure Activities

The students are exposed to a wide range of physical activities in PE classes and also in after school athletics. In PE classes the younger students learn to play group games, practice basic gross motor movements, and participate in a wide range of tactile experiences. The older students take part in more competitive games and eventually play a wide variety of sports such as soccer, hockey, archery, bowling, basketball, and swimming. After school athletics are offered in the areas of track and field, wrestling, cheerleading, and goal ball. The students are encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy foods and staying physically active.
