Kansas State School for the Blind Transition Program

The Kansas State School for the Blind Transition Program is a separate program from our other instructional programs. Students in the Transition Program have additional expectations beyond what is required of a high school student. It is designed for students who have a goal and are capable of demonstrating growth towards independence. The program is not a respite program for parents or districts waiting for entry into adult services.  The one-year program will be reviewed regularly and may be renewed upon mutual agreement between the IEP team and KSSB. The decision to extend is based on the student's progress, as measured by the Action Plan and KSSB staff observation. The renewal option will be discussed annually with the entire team.

This program is for students who:

●  Have met graduation requirements in their home districts (but not received a diploma).

●  Have a Visual Impairment

Steps to apply for the KSSB Transition Program:

1.        Arrange a visit to our campus. This allows the student and KSSB staff to meet, determine if the program is appropriate for the student, and complete placement testing if interested in college classes or technical training options. It is also a time for the student to better understand the program expectations and opportunities.

2.        KSSB staff will follow up with the local district to discuss the viability/cost/procedures of the student attending the Transition Program after the Exploration Visit.**(Please see Page 2).

3.        An Action Plan will be developed to delineate the necessary steps and commitment required of all involved.

4.        Student arrives at KSSB in August to begin Transition Program.

KSSB will contact the local district to determine whether or not the student is a good match for our program. The following events must be concluded and artifacts in place prior to the student's arrival in August:

●  Must have met with KSSB staff in the young adult's home community/school.

●  Must have completed a Person Centered Plan (KSSB staff will assist with this prior to arrival if need be.)

●  TVI, school staff, Student, Parent(s), local Case Manager, and KSSB Staff must meet to develop an Action Plan based in part on information from the Person Centered Plan and KSSB Assessor feedback such that everyone involved will have identified & agreed upon the goals for the student prior to arrival at KSSB.

●  Must have evidence that parents/student have already contacted a "case manager" through either VR or DD system and opened a 'case' prior to student's arrival at KSSB.

●  Signature from student making a commitment to the complete program, collaborating with KSSB staff, parent(s), and district as needed.

●  Signature from parent making a commitment to the complete program, collaborating with KSSB staff, student, and district as needed.

●  Signature from district making a commitment to the complete program, collaborating with KSSB staff, student, and parents as needed.  School District approval/permission (must provide transportation and ongoing support).

●  Signature from KSSB staff making a commitment to the complete program, collaborating with student, parent(s), and district as needed.
